Character Clips
At Esperanza, we have S.H.A.R.K. expectations in all areas of the school. The students are learning that this stands for Safe, Honest and Respectful Kids. In our classroom we have a "Character Clips" chart which is a way to communicate home the behavior your child had at school each day. The exciting part of this classroom system is that your child can communicate with you how well they did and the great choices they made in addition to the typical system of only reporting the negative. Your child has chances to move up the chart to show exceptional character choices, and they take great pride in this- it's quite exciting!
Hanging in our room is a chart with seven colors (see picture below). Each child has a clip with their name on it and every day all clips begin on green, which is the middle of the chart. Throughout the day as your child exhibits behavior that is desirable, or not, their clip will move up and down.
Here are the color breakdowns:
![]() |
Pink- "Outstanding"- exceeded expectations and moved up three times |
| Purple- "Great Job"- exceeded expectations and moved up twice | |
| Blue- "Good Day"- exceeded expectations and moved up once | |
| Green- "Ready to Learn"- followed all expectations for the day | |
| Yellow- "Reminder"- made a choice that was inappropriate for the classroom learning environment. Everyone in life needs reminders, so if the behavior stops, there are no additional consequences for this level. | |
| Orange- "Teacher's Choice"- the teacher will determine an appropriate consequence for their action to rectify the situation. This could be a phone call to you, a loss of privilege, writing an apology note, or whatever seems fit for that situation with that particular student. | |
| Red- "Parent Contact"- the student was consistently making choices that affected our learning environment. You will be contacted that day about this behavior. |
**If your child is on orange or red, they may come home with a reflection sheet. This needs to be reviewed by you with your child, signed and returned the next day.
In each child's S.H.A.R.K. book is a calendar where they will be responsible for coloring their character colors to show you each night!
