Math Curriculum

In first grade we use the Investigations in Number, Data, and Space as our math resource.  This program is designed to give students meaningful mathematical problems with real world application and to deepen number sense past the algorithms and memorization. This program addresses the needs of all learners, and allows for many strategies to be used depending on the ability of the student.  It also encourages students to find multiple answers to open ended questions.  Below you will find our nine units, a brief description of each, and the timeframe in which these will be taught.

1

How Many of Each?
Addition, Subtraction, and Number Sense
In this unit, students will count, order and compare quantities, find addition combinations up to ten, and solve story problems. Students will also begin the classroom routines such as developing visual images of a number and calendar skills.

August - September

2

Making Shapes and Designing Quilts
2-D Geometry

The second unit invites students to observe, describe, compare, classify, compose and decompose 2-D shapes.  A focus will be on geometric language (rotation, translation, reflection, vertex, etc.) as we learn these objectives.

3

Solving Story Problems
Addition, Subtraction and Number Sense
This unit includes counting skills (forward, back, sets, comparing large amounts, composing and decomposing numbers, and finding all the combinations of a number).  This is also the introduction of subtraction.  We will be using games, story problems and other work to develop an understanding of addition and subtraction.

November-December

4

What Would You Rather Be?
Data Analysis

Students will learn to collect and sort information.  Graphs and other representations of this data will be made.

January

13

5

Fish Lengths and Animal Jumps
Measurement

Measurement will include the use of inch tiles, rulers, and nonstandard forms as well such as cubes.  Comparing measurements and story problems involving length will also be explored.

February

11

6

Number Games and Crayon Puzzles
Addition, Subtraction and Number Sense

This unit will focus on composing numbers with two and three addends and continue to work with combinations of ten.  We will continue to work on addition and subtraction.

February

7

Color, Shape, and Number Patterns
Patterns and Functions

Students will make, describe, and extend patterns.

October

8

Twos, Fives and Tens
Addition, Subtraction and Number Sense

Number sense will continue to be built as we work to achieve fluency with two-addend combinations of ten and develop other skills with our base-10 number system.  Students will also learn the value of counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s to improve accuracy and speed when counting large quantities.

OTHER We also cover telling time to the hour and half hour, counting money to $1.00, number patterns, and even/odd numbers.
