Reading Curriculum

Kyrene uses Harcourt Trophies as our reading resource. This program includes phonics, spelling and reading comprehension skills. Each week our class will have a story to read, focus skill, focus strategy and phonics skill. As most of you know, first grader’s reading abilities have a large range. While some of the skill development is a universal need for all abilities, Harcourt has also developed leveled readers (small books) that are used to differentiate. During reading groups and independent practice time of the day your child will be practicing skills that are tailored to their needs, and will be reading books that suit them.
